Do not use

Not Compatible
  • AAA — AAA is 1.5V and a different size — not a substitute for 12V A23 remotes
  • CR2032 — CR2032 is a 3V coin cell — used in many key fobs, but not in A23 garage remotes
  • 9V — 9V rectangular packs will not fit A23 holders and sit at a different voltage

Frequently Asked Questions

Is A23 the same as 23A?

Yes. A23 and 23A refer to the same 12V alkaline remote battery size. MN21, LRV08, GP23A, and V23GA are common brand or regional equivalents.

Can I replace an A23 with a 12V battery of another shape?

Only if the replacement is the same A23/23A form factor (~10.3 × 28.5 mm) and 12V alkaline chemistry. A 9V rectangular battery or a coin cell will not fit or power the circuit correctly.

Why does my garage remote use A23 instead of CR2032?

Many older or higher-power RF remotes need 12V for transmitter range. Modern car key fobs often use 3V coin cells like CR2032 — check the printed code on your old cell before buying.

How long does an A23 battery last?

Capacity is only about 40–55 mAh, so heavy daily use shortens life. Infrequently used garage remotes often last 1–3 years; replace when range drops or the transmitter LED dims.

Should I always trust cross-reference charts?

Confirm replacements with your device manual — especially for lithium vs alkaline chemistries.

Selection notes

Match the label on the old cell (A23, 23A, MN21, or LRV08). Name-brand packs last longer in infrequently used garage remotes. Do not force a 9V or AAA into an A23 bay.
