CMOS & Motherboard Backup Battery Guide

Desktop and many industrial boards use a CR2032 (or occasionally CR2025) for RTC and BIOS settings backup. Voltage must stay at 3V lithium — never install a 1.5V alkaline button cell.

Selection notes

  • Power down and unplug before swapping; note BIOS time will reset.
  • Orient the (+) side toward the clip marked positive.
  • Industrial boards may specify BR2032 for wider temperature range.

A CR2032 is a 3V lithium manganese-dioxide coin cell, 20.0 × 3.2 mm, typically 220–240 mAh (about 0.66–0.72 Wh). Fresh cells often measure 3.2–3.4 V. DL2032 and ECR2032 are brand labels for the same size. CR2025 and CR2016 share the 20 mm diameter but are thinner and not drop-in replacements. Do not use rechargeable LIR2032 (~3.6–3.7 V) unless the device is designed for it.

ECR2032 is Energizer's trade name for the industry-standard CR2032 3V lithium coin cell (20 × 3.2 mm). Searches for “energizer cr2032” and “ecr2032 vs cr2032” are brand-label questions, not a different size.

CR2025 is a thinner 3V lithium coin cell with the same 20 mm diameter as CR2032 but only 2.5 mm height and lower capacity (~160–170 mAh). Many slim key fobs specify CR2025 — do not assume CR2032 will fit.

BR2032 matches CR2032 dimensions but uses Li-CFx chemistry for better high-temperature and long-term industrial backup performance.

ML2032 is a rechargeable 20 × 3.2 mm lithium manganese cell — not a casual drop-in for disposable CR2032 applications.

LIR2032 is a rechargeable lithium-ion cell in the 20 × 3.2 mm outline. It is the product people mean by “rechargeable CR2032”. Nominal voltage is about 3.6–3.7 V (up to ~4.2 V fresh off the charger) and typical capacity is only ~35–45 mAh — a fraction of a primary CR2032.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will a rechargeable LIR2032 work on a motherboard?

Usually no. LIR2032 is ~3.6V rechargeable and can over-voltage RTC circuits designed for primary CR2032 cells.

How can I tell if the CMOS CR2032 is dead?

The clock resets after every power-off, or BIOS settings will not stick. A fresh CR2032 reads about 3.2–3.4 V; replace around 2.8–3.0 V.

Is a KTS CR2032 different from a regular CR2032?

KTS is an OEM brand often found on motherboard trays. Size and 3V class match a standard CR2032 — replace with any quality CR2032 / DL2032 / ECR2032.

Should I use BR2032 on a PC motherboard?

Only if the board or industrial chassis specifies BR chemistry or a wide temperature range. For a desk PC, CR2032 is the usual part.
